Is it Fining Wood or is it Finings Wood? After 40 years living in Lane End and walking along its footpaths almost daily, I can`t decide. As you can see on the map this is a significant area of Ancient Woodland that is in the heart of Lane End village. Sixty plus acres if you include the beautiful Long Copse adjoining Finings Wood. Its entire South Eastern boundary that starts in the village forming most of the tree line dipping into the valley of the spectacular view as you leave Ditchfield Common Allotments, on just one of the many footpaths that lead towards the woods. My name is Paul Thomas and I have been writing to the present owner for the last 2 years ever since the first news of Chalky Fields came up in the Clarion in 2019. I saw straight away that this could be a unique opportunity for Lane End Village to acquire and protect Finings Wood for future generations. As a result, the owner has now agreed to sell it to the Lane End Parish Council who need to consider it alongside all the proposals put forward so not guaranteed. So please, be a Friend of Finings Wood, sharing our page and posts and adding your support. Lobby the members of your Parish Council who need persuading, that this is a worthwhile project and a truly unique opportunity unlikely to be repeated. All ideas how to make the most of the woods are important and the good folk of Lane End have an amazing range of talented and professional skills helping and seeking advice to make it all happen and follow through, with natural, sustainable and financially viable maintenance solutions that come with responsible ownership. Here is some food for thought- 'Ancient Woodland' is defined as an area of land that has been under tree cover since before 1600. There is now just 2.4% of land in the UK defined as Ancient Woodland, so it is a really precious jewel on our doorstep. It would be something for Lane End to be proud of. Let me know if you think so too.
